The following spreadsheet is a sound suggestion regarding the funds needed and how they should be split between the purchase cost of the vehicle and the money needed for the camper conversion.
As always, this is just a suggestion, based on my experiences. We are aiming for a healthy mix that provides for a reliable vehicle in combination with a camper conversion that fits the purpose of the camper as well as the condition of the vehicle. It doesn't make much sense to invest $8,000 on a conversion in a $3,000 beater, and buying a new(ish) minivan for travel or fulltime living, while leaving only $2,000 for the build, is equally out of proportion.
